28 October 2009

Abuja — The travails of the Peoples Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate for the Anambra State governorship election, Professor Chukwuma Soludo continued yesterday following the kidnap of his octogenarian father, Pa Soludo at his Isuofia country home in Anambra state by unknown gun men.

The incident which occurred at about 7 pm yesterday LEADERSHIP confirmed introduced another dimension to the Soludo saga since he was selected as the party's flag-bearer for the February 6, 2010 governorship election in Anambra state by the party's National Working Committee (NWC).

As at the time of going to press, the whereabout of Pa Soludo was yet to be ascertained.

Media Consultant to the Soludo campaign organisation, Mr. C. Don. Adinuba while confirming the incident yesterday to LEADERSHIP said that the retiree octogenarian's kidnap has opened up a totally new chapter in the travails of the gubernatorial candidate.

He said that the incident had been reported to the police in Awka, the Anambra state capital, adding that the Police was working on 'the theory that the kidnap was politically motivated'.

Prof Soludo had remarked during a dinner party organised in his honour by his friends and associates last month, narrated how his father was earlier kidnapped while he was carrying out the banking reforms and beaten to the state of unconsciousness. Soludo said that his father lost an eye in that incident.

The former Governor of the Central Bank had also told the audience that that incident forced him to relocate his family to Europe, but swore that he would not be intimidated or deterred.

Since his selection as the gubernatorial candidate, there has been a flurry of legal actions to stop him from flying the party's flag.

Following a suit instituted by one of the failed governorship aspirants in an Abuja High court, the court had ordered the PDP to refrain from parading Soludo as its gubernatorial candidate. Other suits are pending in courts in Anambra state.

Only on Monday, the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] announced that Soludo's name would be excluded from the list of parties candidates eligible to contest the February 6, 2010 poll on account of a court order.

INEC also raised queries over the way and manner the PDP selected Soludo as its flag-bearer for the Anambra gubernatorial poll.

In line with the present circumstances. Soludo should use his tongue to count his teeth. This is just a test ground for him.
