For Africa to effectively tackle the growing challenges of climate change currently holding every part of the world to ransom, the continent is in dire need of not less than $70 billion annually to mitigate the impact of the scourge.
This was the submission of Africa Environmental & Economic peace Mission (AEEPM) during a build up workshop for the global summit on climate change slated for Copenhagen in December this year.
Briefing journalists on the outcome of the recent UN Climate Change conference held in Bangkok, Thailand, Deputy National Coordinator of the group, Princess Mrs. Rosemary Ijeoma Okenwa said that the conference, which was held from Sept. 28 to Oct. 10, failed to reach an agreement on key issues slated for discussion.
"Little progress was made on mid-term targets for emission reduction by developed countries and there was no clarity in important issues such as financing and additional actions to be taken by developing countries like Nigeria.
While advising possible Nigerian delegates to the conference coming up in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December to negotiate for a treaty that would help reduce the impact of global warming, she noted that "it is in our national interest to push those large countries which contribute a lot to gas flaring. Without that, we will not be able to address the big problems that we have here".
"We should ensure that we have a deal that does not compromise our ability to develop as a nation and meet our responsibilities to our people", stressing that Nigeria would require enormous funds to adapt to climate change, reverse desertification and prevent the surge of the Atlantic Ocean.
On the federal delegates, Mrs. Okenwa urged the government and minister of Environment to ensure that the services of the nation's best brains in environmental matters and negotiating skills were utilised so as to present strong representation.
