Maputo — As more results from Thursday's general elections are announced over Radio Mozambique, they confirm that the ruling Frelimo Party and its presidential candidate, the incumbent, Armando Guebuza, are heading towards an overwhelming victory.
Among the latest results announced on Thursday morning by the radio are the following:
From 22 polling stations in Mogovolas district, in the northern province of Nampula:
Armando Guebuza (Frelimo) 3,833 Daviz Simango (MDM) 409 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo) 2,050
From six polling stations in Nacaroa district, also in Nampula:
Armando Guebuza (Frelimo) 1,306 Daviz Simango (MDM) 78 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo) 305
From ten polling stations in the northern port of Nacala:
Armando Guebuza (Frelimo) 2,406 Daviz Simango (MDM) 144 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo) 1,564
From eight polling stations in Namuno district, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado:
Armando Guebuza (Frelimo) 1,934 Daviz Simango (MDM) 114 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo) 298
From eight polling stations in the neighbouring Cabo Delgado district of Balama:
Armando Guebuza (Frelimo) 1,582 Daviz Simango (MDM) 93 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo) 435
From 28 polling stations in Gorongosa district, in the central province of Sofala:
Armando Guebuza (Frelimo) 3,383 Daviz Simango (MDM) 114 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo) 298
From eight polling stations in Nicoadala district, in Zambezia province:
Armando Guebuza (Frelimo) 1,599 Daviz Simango (MDM) 159 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo) 550
From 25 polling stations in Zavala district, in the southern province of Inhambane:
Armando Guebuza (Frelimo) 8,223 Daviz Simango (MDM) 537 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo) 464
From three polling stations in Matola-Rio, in Maputo province:
Armando Guebuza (Frelimo) 815 Daviz Simango (MDM) 123 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo) 37
From ten polling stations in the city of Xai-Xai, capital of the southern province of Gaza:
Armando Guebuza (Frelimo) 5,612 Daviz Simango (MDM) 695 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo) 148
In the parliamentary elections, Frelimo has a comfortable lead over Renamo, and is well on the way to maintaining, or even increasing its parliamentary majority (in the outgoing parliament, Frelimo holds 160 seats, and the now defunct Renamo-Electoral Union coalition holds the remaining 90).
The 16 minor parties standing in some of the constituencies have achieved truly derisory results. In many polling stations they do not reach double figures, and on the results announced so far, none of the minor parties will elect any deputies to the new parliament.
It seems certain, however, that there will be three groups in the future parliament. In addition to Frelimo and Renamo, the MDM will elect a few deputies from Sofala province and Maputo city, and just possibly one or two from the other two constituencies where it is on the ballot paper, Inhambane and Niassa.
