Maputo — Early results from polling stations in Maputo city suggest that the newly formed Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) and its leader, Daviz Simango, may come second in this constituency in the parliamentary and presidential elections held on Thursday.
If these results are confirmed, then the MDM will occupy the two parliamentary seats for Maputo currently held by the former rebel movement Renamo, and might even take a seat or two from the ruling Frelimo party.
The results collected by AIM from five polling stations set up in a central Maputo primary school are:
Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 1,908 Daviz Simango (MDM): 912 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo): 99
The results from these same polling stations for the three main forces contesting the parliamentary election were:
Frelimo: 1,854 MDM: 1,071 Renamo: 154
Simango is also in second place in polling stations in the neighbouring city of Matola. In 13 Matola polling stations visited by AIM, the presidential results were as follows:
Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 4,633 Daviz Simango (MDM): 792 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo): 243
Matola is in Maputo province, where the MDM was not on the ballot paper. The results for Frelimo and Renamo for these 13 stations were:
Frelimo: 4,806 Renamo: 538
