Cameroon: A Colourful Welcome at Nsimalen

Lukong Pius Nyuylime

29 October 2009

Chadian President, Idriss Deby Itno received a red carpet treatment on arrival at the airport.

The stage was well set to give the Chadian President, Idriss Deby Itno a reception worthy of the Head of State at the Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport. All went according to plan with all protocol respected when the Presidential plane carrying the Chadian leader touched down at exactly 4:10pm. The Head of State, President Paul Biya, who had arrived at the Presidential Lounge at the airport a few minutes earlier, immediately went out and moved to the foot of the plane where the two Statesmen embraced themselves.

All it takes to welcome a Head of State on an official visit was available, a strict protocol, a mounted guard of honour, and a constituted national and diplomatic corps. The playing of the National Anthems of both countries, the inspection of the guard of honour and the introduction of the constituted corps combined to give the event a solemn coloration. It was in effect, an enlarged constituted corps, headed by House Speaker, Cavaye Yeguié Djibril, followed by the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Philemon Yang and the First President of the Supreme Court, Alexis Depanda Mouelle that turned out to assist the Head of State welcome the Chadian leader.

As one would have expected, the population turned out in their numbers with messages of welcome and hospitality. The Chadian citizens living in Yaounde were very much present. A good number of them were given the chance to welcome their President at the tar mark and ceremonial ground where they stood conspicuously waving flags and displaying placards. On one of the placards, it was simply written, "Mouvement patriotique du salue et partis allies", the name of Prsident Deby's political party.

Dance groups, notably of the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement from the Mfoundi as well as Mefou and Afamba Divisions were available to illuminate the event. Conspicuously present was the association of girls and women of Upper Sanaga. "Your Excellency, the CPDM wishes you a hearty welcome and a pleasant stay in Cameroon", read one of the messages.
