Mozambique: Victory for Opposition in Machanga

Maputo — In only one district in the country so far has the Radio Mozambique count of the polling station result sheets from Wednesday's general election given any candidate other than the incumbent President, Armando Guebuza, a majority of votes.

This district is Machanga, in the central province of Sofala, where the mayor of Beira, Daviz Simango, leader of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), is in the lead.

The result for nine Machanga polling stations given by Radio Mozambique was:

Daviz Simango (MDM): 1,935 Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 1,657 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo): 247

In the parliamentary elections, Frelimo was less than 100 votes ahead of the MDM in those same nine stations:

Frelimo: 1,740 MDM: 1,654 Renamo: 348
