Quelimane — Mozambican President Armando Guebuza is set to win Wednesday's presidential election easily in the city of Quelimane, capital of the central province of Zambezia.
In the 48 Quelimane polling stations visited by AIM, Guebuza was taking almost twice as many votes as the two other candidates combined. In these stations, Afonso Dhlakama, leader of the former rebel movement Renamo, is lying second, with Daviz Simango, leader of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), less than 150 votes behind him.
The results from these 48 stations were:
Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 12,773 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo): 3,646 Daviz Simango (MDM): 3,505
The results collected by AIM from 18 Quelimane polling stations in the parliamentary election were:
Frelimo: 4,100 Renamo: 2,113
None of the minor parties competing in Quelimane received any significant number of votes.
Collecting the results is made difficult by the theft of result sheets. The sheets are supposed to be posted on the walls or doors of polling stations, but all too often people who do not like the results steal the sheets, so that members of the public cannot read them.
