Maputo — In Maputo city, polling stations visited by AIM so far all show the mayor of Beira, Daviz Simango, and his party, the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), coming second in Wednesday's general elections - albeit a long way behind President Armando Guebuza and the ruling Frelimo Party.
12 polling stations visited by AIM in the Polana-Canico neighbourhood gave the following results for the presidential election:
Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 4,003 Daviz Simango (MDM): 427 Armando Guebuza (Renamo): 225
These same stations gave very similar results for the parliamentary election:
Frelimo: 3,650 MDM: 439 Renamo: 255
Simango is also easily beating Dhlakama in the neighbouring city of Matola. From a further 28 polling stations visited by AIM journalists, the presidential results were as follows:
Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 9,756 Daviz Simango (MDM): 2,172 Armando Guebuza (Renamo): 486
