Ethiopia: Project for Reintegration of Illegally Trafficked Ethiopian Women Returnees Signed

Addis Abeba — The European Commission funded project entitled "Socio-Economic Reintegration for Illegally Trafficked Ethiopian Women and Returnees from the Middle East Countries" was signed on Tuesday among the United Nations Development Program and four local civic and development organizations in Ethiopia, a joint EC Delegation to Ethiopia and the UNDP in Ethiopia press release said.

The Project will support the socio-economic reintegration of 300 returnees and deportees to Ethiopia from the Middle East with the total amount of 200,000 euros.

The 200,000 Euros project in Ethiopia will provide the returnees with temporary shelter, psycho-social support and marketable skills training, and will undertake research on the specific needs of returnees. The implementing partners will be: Ethiopian Orthodox Church: Development and Inter-Church Aid Commission, Refugee and Returnee Affairs Department (EOC-DICAC), Ethiopia, Association for Forced Migrants, Ethiopia,AGAR Yearegawian Erdata Mescha Mehaber Ethiopia, and Stitching Dir, Netherlands.

European Commission Vice-President Jacques Barrot, Commissioner responsible for Freedom, Security and Justice, stated that "these projects promoted by local actors are testimony to the European Union's solidarity with migrants who are committed to fostering the development of their countries of origin and with local communities' efforts aimed at ensuring that migration has a positive impact on their local development".

The Ethiopia project is part of the European Commission and the United Nations Joint Migration and Development Initiative (JMDI) with a total budget of 15 million Euros for the coming 3 years. The overall objective of the EC-UN Joint Migration and Development Initiative is to support civil society organizations and local authorities seeking to contribute to linking migration and development. Ethiopia is one of the 16 priority countries besides Algeria, Cape Verde, Ecuador, Egypt, Georgia, Ghana, Jamaica, Mali, Moldova, Morocco, Nigeria, Philippines, Senegal, Sri Lanka, and Tunisia.
