Minna — the Niger State government has spent a total of N715 million to reinvigorate the sector, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr Yahaya Vatsa disclosed. He told pressmen yesterday in Minna that the sum of N225 million was spent on dredging Tagwai dam and an additional N190 million spent on dredging the Chanchaga channel of the dam.
He said an additional N300 million was spent to reinvigorate the state water board, adding that work has passed 50 percent completion stage in cleaning reservoirs at the place as four out of the eight reservoirs are already cleaned and are in full operational state.
Dr Vatsa explained that before the end of the year, more than 60 percent of people living in Minna and its environs will have frequent water supply saying that it will be rationed to pave way for all to get water at least 12 hours a day.
According to the General Manager of the state water works, Engineer Abdulkareem Musa, the dredging of the water feeding the works was necessary to de-stilt it, adding that it will reduce the work load on the generators and less money will be spent on buying water treatment chemicals.
He called on institutions and government owing the state water board to make payments, adding that federal and state government is owing it more than N150 million naira as charges for water rate.
