ACTING Local Government and Housing Minister, Bradford Machila has advised councils against compromising on the implementation of Market and Bus Station Act.
Mr Machila said in Kitwe that Government came up with the Act to address various challenges relating to management of markets and bus stations.
Reacting to complaints by Kitwe Mayor, Stephen Chipungu that some associations and individuals were opposed to the implementation of the Markets and Bus Stations Act, Mr Machila said this was law and there should be no compromise.
"I have heard your concerns relating to the management of markets and bus stations and I wish to assure you that Government's position and policy on this matter is embedded in the Markets and Bus Stations Act, which vest powers to manage and administer markets and bus stations in respective local authorities," Mr Machila said.
This, he said, was the position of the law and was not debatable stressing that Government was of laws and would ensure that it operated within the ambits of law.
The minister said Government decision to come up with Markets and Bus Stations Act was aimed at bringing to the fore a new management model for running of markets and bus stations in Zambia.
Mr Machila said with this law in place, running of markets and bus stations would see among other things reduced bureaucracy as well as reduced political interference.
"Decision making process will be significantly reduced and ensuring timely decisions necessary for smooth operations of markets and bus stations," Mr Machila said.
