African Handball Championship - MINUH Challenges GSP in the Final

Minuh will take on GSP in the men's category whereas Primeiro will slug it out with Petro Athletico in the women's category.

The curtains will be drawn today to mark the end of the 31st edition of the African handball championship at the Yaounde Sports complex. As the saying goes, many are called and few are choosen. From 11 teams that entered the contention for the trophy in the male category, only two, MINUH and GSP of Algeria are still in the race. Both teams qualified for the finals after eliminating their rivals in the semi finals played last Wednesday. GSP defeated Primeiro of Angola 22-17 while the lone Cameroonian clubs still in contention, MINUH beat Munisport of Congo 27-21.

It will be a David versus Goliath battle when MINUH challenges defending champions, GSP in the final today. Groupement Sportive Petrolier, GSP formerly known as Mouloudia Club of Algers, MCA, is the most capped handball club on the continent, having won the African champion league 10 times and the cup winners title 9 times. More so, they are the defending champions. Both teams are not meeting for the first time and previous battles between them have ended in favour of GSP. The match therefore smacks off revenge for MINUH.

MINUH compared to a giant like GSP is a lightweight. Their track record on the continent includes only Cup winner’s cup titles and they were vice African champions in 2003, 2004 and 2007. As opposed to the GSP who had an easy walk over their opponents all along the tournament, MINUH qualified with a lot of difficulty at time turning the table at the eleventh hour.

It will be a fratricidal war in the final in the feminine category as it will pit two Angolan club sides, Primeiro and Petro Athletico. It is worthy to mention that the Angolan delegation put up a good performance in the competition as three of the four clubs engaged in the competition, reached the semi finals.
