Gambia: Five Years for Mosque Thief

The Kanifing Magistrates Court, presided over by Magistrate Ikpala, on Tuesday, convicted and sentenced one Mustapha Sanyang to five years imprisonment without any option to a fine. He was found guilty of stealing and door breaking.

In his judgement, Magistrate Ikpala told the court that the police records have proven that the convict has been convicted three times by the Bundung and Kanifing Magistrates Courts. He said that the society needs to be given a break from the accused personÂ's harassment. This time, he stated, the accused deserved a heavier sentence.

According to the prosecution, the accused on the 21st October, 2009, at Kanifing South, broke down the door of the mosque of the Department of Works and Communication and stole some items, including a radio cassette player, microphone, Solar lamp, tuner and an amplifier, all valued at D10,000.
