29 October 2009

One Momodou Ceesay, a convict, has filed an appeal at the high court in Banjul presided over by Justice Joseph Wowo, challenging the sentenced imposed on him by a lower court for acting as a security threat to the state.

The convict was sentenced by the then magistrate Edrissa Mbai of the Banjul Magistrates Court to serve 2 years imprisonment for purportedly posing as a member of the presidential guard. According to the facts, the appellant, on March 27, 2009, put on clothes, goggles and other regalia very similar to the people employed in the presidential guard of HE President Sheikh Professor Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh.

It was further revealed that he then got into the convoy that escorted the president to the National Assembly during the state opening of the assembly. The convict was then said to have gained access to the area which was restricted as he was mistaken as one of the security officers. It was revealed that an eagle eyed police officer observed him and arrested him while he was trying to gain access into the very room where the president was delivering his speech.

When he was investigated, he was found to be in possession of a photograph of himself in full military regalia or camouflage. The presiding magistrate in passing sentence disclosed that the convict was dangerous and a threat to national security noting that he was not a military officer or a security officer, but posed as one.

He was then sentenced accordingly.
