Gambia: Jato Sillah is New Forestry Minister

Banjul — The President of the Republic, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh has decided to relieve Momodou A Cham commonly known as Kotu Cham of his cabinet appointment with effect from yesterday, 27th October 2009, and appointed Mr Jato Sillah as minister of Forestry and the Environment with immediate effect, a press release from the Office of the President revealed.

The release reads: Â"His Excellency the President of the Republic of The Gambia Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh, acting under the provision of Section 71 (4) (b) of the Constitution of The Republic of The Gambia, has decided to relieve Momodou A Cham of his cabinet appointment with effect from 27th October 2009.

His Excellency the president has also in exercise of the powers conferred upon him under Section 71(1) and 71 (3) of the Constitution of The Republic of The Gambia, appointed Mr Jato Sillah as Minister of Forestry and the Environment with immediate effect,Â" the release concluded.

Reacting to his appointment, Minister Sillah said: Â"I feel very happy and I would like to thank His Excellency the president of the Republic for the trust and confidence bestowed on me. I have to say that it was a surprise to meÂ".

Â"I promise that I will serve my country and I would join His Excellency the president in all his development endeavours. It is a challenge but I accept it in good faith. I wish all Gambians join hands with His Excellency the president to support him fulfil his dreams,Â" he remarked.

Profile

Jato Sillah was born in Kerewan Nyakoi, in the Wuli West District, Upper River Region on October 28th, 1962. Minister Sillah attended St AugustineÂ's High School from 1975 to 1980. He joined the Civil Service in September 1980 as a Forest Guard trainee attached to the Reforestation Unit. He rose through the ranks of Forest Guard, Senior Forest Ranger, Forest Officer, Forest Management Planner, Senior Forestry Officer, until he became the Director of Forestry in the year 2000, the post he held until his new appointment as minister of Forestry and the Environment. The new forestry minister bagged MSc in Forest Economics and Planning at the Faculty of Forestry in Georg August University, Gottingen, Germany.
