30 October 2009

The Senate yesterday urged the Federal Government to immediately and passionately pursue the completion of the next level of the peace in the Niger Delta region.

The upper legislative House also resolved that a letter of commendation be sent to President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua for a feat that qualifies him for a Nobel Prize for peace.

This came on the heels of a motion By Senator Nimi Barigha Amange from Bayelsa State , titled, 'Successful disarmament of Armed Groups in the Niger Delta by President Umaru Musa Yar Adua'.

In the motion co-sponsored by 61 other senators, the mover of the motion expressed concern that previous administrations were not able to bring peace in the Niger Delta region despite the fact that the region is the life-wire of the country.

The mover of the motion also observed that the neglect or apathy of human and infrastructural development in the Niger Delta is not a misdeed of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua but various governments of the past.
