Mozambique: Mozambican Voters in South Africa Back Guebuza

30 October 2009

Maputo — Mozambican voters resident in South Africa voted overwhelmingly in support of President Armando Guebuza and the ruling Frelimo Party in Wednesday's general elections.

There are two constituencies for Mozambicans living in the diaspora - one for Africa, and the other for "the rest of the world" (which currently means just Portugal and Germany).

The Africa constituency is dominated by South Africa which has by the far the largest community of Mozambican emigrants. There were 57 polling stations set up for Mozambicans in South Africa, and according to a Friday report on Radio Mozambique, the results from these stations showed over 95 per cent support for Guebuza.

The results in detail were:

Presidential election

Daviz Simango (MDM): 359 Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 25,903 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo): 602

Parliamentary election

Frelimo: 23,087 Renamo: 713
