Maputo — Results from entire districts and cities from the Mozambican general election held on Wednesday are now becoming available.
The results sheets from all polling stations were taken on Wednesday night and Thursday morning to the district and city branches of STAE (Electoral Administration Technical Secretariat), where they are compiled into a single district or city result.
One of the first district results announced by Radio Mozambique on Friday was from Dondo, in the central province of Sofala. The district was won by the ruling Frelimo Party, with a close battle for second place between the former rebel movement, Renamo and the breakaway Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM).
The results from the 89 Dondo polling stations were as follows (candidates and parties shown in the order they appeared on the ballot paper):
Presidential election
Daviz Simango (MDM): 6,333 Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 20,428 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo): 5,569
Parliamentary election
Frelimo: 19,334 Renamo: 6,195 MDM: 5,248
Chimoio, capital of the central province of Manica, has also finished the presidential count. As in Dondo, Simango and Dhlakama were neck and neck in the race for second place, but a long way behind Guebuza. The results were:
Daviz Simango (MDM): 8,462 Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 32,560 Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo): 8,992
By late Friday morning, the Chimoio city STAE was still collating the parliamentary results sheets.
