Lagos — Haven for the Nigerian Child Foundation recently organized a fundraising auction to raise funds for its cause - rehabilitating Street Children
The event which held at the residence of the Founder, Mrs. Oluyemisi Wada was supported by Polo Limited, the Ben Enwonwu Foundation, Treasure, House Fine Arts, Woven Elegance, Venivici, BM Pro, British Airways and a host of other corporate organisations.
A silent auction was held, and guests were invited to bid on items such as works of art, luxury goods, landscaping and gardening advice, lunch with a star and a host of other items. A lucky ticket holder went home with a British Airways ticket. The highlight of the afternoon was a chorographic display by some of the Street Children in whose benefit the fundraising was held.
In her words, Founder of The Haven, Mrs. Oluyemisi Wada, explained that "It is important to us that people understand that these Street Children are neither criminals nor area boys and girls, but merely children who have been victims of abuse, neglect, poverty, or death of one or both parents. And like normal children, they flee that situation, but are unaware of the full circumstances of their actions. At this event, some of our sponsors and would-be sponsors finally get the chance to meet one-on-one with these children, and get to understand that they, like any other normal child, have their own dreams and aspirations". A guest, Mrs. Maria Okonye said "I am really impressed with the work The Haven is doing, not everyone has the courage to see something wrong in our society, and then set out to try and fix it. I commend Oluyemisi Wada and her team for the good works they are doing".
The Haven for the Nigerian Child Foundation was founded in 2008 to help get children off the streets. It also raises awareness about the plight of street children, and lobbies the Government, Corporations and Private individuals on their behalf. The Foundation recently launched the N12.50K a day campaign which seeks to encourage people to donate as little as N12.50K a Day to help a street child. The funds realised from this campaign will be used to relocate even more street children, send them to school, and empower their mothers by setting up petty businesses for them.

When Fabian Mbachu Becomes Rotary President
Rotary Club is a humanitarian service oriented organization that has been in existence for many decades, its impact in providing succor for the less privileged and helping the society has won the club accolades both locally and internationally. In carrying out its yearly activities, every year, the baton of leadership in Rotary is passed on to a new class of committed and dedicated Rotarians. It was a day of glory for Rotary Club of Apapa, District 9110 Nigeria, the oldest in the country last Saturday, October 24, 2009 when Rotn. Fabian Ifeanyi Mbachu was elected its 37th president for 2009/2010. One could feel the excitement in the air as club members and invited guests were gaily dressed. The older ones settled for native attires such as Agbada while the young and not too old were decked in suits. All the past presidents and patron of the club such as Dr. Omolayole, Rotn, Isaac Bezi, Chief Osifo, Mr. Ben Eke, Mr. Victor Hammond, Mr. Emmanuel Tayo Alabi just to mention were all present. There was enough small chops while food and drinks were in abundance.
In his inaugural speech, elated Rotn Mbachu said he would like to use the opportunity to express his profound gratitude to the Doyen Dr. Omolayole and the entire membership of the Rotary Club Apapa, for counting him worthy to serve as president. Throwing more light on the Rotary as an organization, Mbachu said, "Rotary founded in 1905 by Paul Harris and three friends is a world-wide, non-profit, non-government, non-religion organization devoted to the service of humanity in several ways. For example, the global campaign against the deadly disease called Polio is a Rotary initiative that has touched the lives of millions of children in many countries of the world including Nigeria".
"Every year, the Rotary International President chooses a theme to emphasis a particular area of focus on service to humanity and this year's theme is "The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands". While the organization has demonstrated its commitment to humanity in the recent past, Rotn Mbachu said there is need to do more to be able to achieve the objectives of the organization. Mbachu therefore, used the opportunity to solicit the members help in achieving laid down goals for Apapa community. He said the listed projects can only be successfully achieved through the benevolence and magnanimity of members of the club in partnership with corporate bodies, individuals and Rotary International.
