Kenya: Aga Khan's Rachita Sets Four Swimming Records

Nairobi — Rachita Shah of Mombasa's Aga Khan Academy on Sunday set five new Kenya records during the Brookeside swimming championships.

Eighteen-year-old Rachita started the day by shattering her own girls 100 metres backstroke when she clocked one minute 08.11 seconds during the National Age-Group Open and Relays Championships at Oshwal pool. Her previous record time was 1:11.67 seconds which she set at her school swimming pool in February, this year.

Sylvia Brunlehner, 15, of Bandari, who had earlier set four national records, came in second in a time of 1:11.21 which also bettered previous record by Rachita. June Opot of Kenyatta University was third in 1:19.96.

Rachita went on to break open, 16 years and over and all comers girls 50m backstroke records when she returned 31.76 to break her previous mark of 33.07 which she also set last February.

Sylvia finished second (33.08) with Emily Moir of Braesburn taking third spot (37.81). Thirteen-year-old Deeyn Shah of Bandari Swim Club became the first boy in the three-day championship to establish a new national mark when he clocked 32.70 in the boys' 12-13 years 50m backstroke event.

Braesburn's Micah Fernandes was another record breaker when he won the boys 10-11 50m breaststroke old time of 40.73 set byIan Meredith in 2005 by establishing a new mark of 39.20.

100m backstroke: 1. Hamdan Bayusuf, Bandari (1:10.07); 2. Akshay Shah, Aga Khan Academy Msa (1:14.21); 3. Rushabh M Shah, OANBI (1:18.93).

100m open: 1. Mohamed Shelile, Coast swim Club (1:19.52); 2. Bhavik Mehta, AKAM (1:25.98); 3. Ezekiel Njoroge, STENT (1:28.14).
