Zimbabwe: Kabila Arrives for Working Visit

2 November 2009

Harare — Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila, who is the Sadc chairman, arrived in the country last night on a working visit.

While information on the purpose of his visit was still sketchy by late last night, President Kabila told journalists in Johannesburg yesterday before leaving for Zimbabwe that he "might meet the principals" to the GPA.

"I am here to visit friends," Mr Kabila told journali-sts at a local hotel yesterday soon after arrival.

Vice President Joice Mujuru welcomed President Kabila at the Harare International Airport.

Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, Minister of Media, Information and Publicity Webster Shamu, Women's Affairs and Community Development Minister Olivia Muchena and senior Government officials accompanied VP Mujuru.

Also present at the airport to welcome President Kabila was his Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation Minister Alexis Thambwe Mwamba, who arrived in the country earlier in the day, and the DRC Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Mawampanga Mwana-nanga.

President Kabila's visit comes shortly after a Sadc Organ on Politics, Defence and Security ministerial delegation came to Zimbabwe to review the GPA.

However, Mr Mwanananga last Wednesday said President Kabila's visit was a follow-up to the meeting he had with President Mugabe on the sidelines of the Sadc Summit held in Kinshasa in September.

During its visit to Zimbabwe, the Sadc ministerial delegation said the Troika would convene an ordinary summit soon where a report on Zimbabwe and Lesotho would be tabled.

President Kabila took over the chairmanship of Sadc from South Africa's President Jacob Zuma at the regional bloc's 29th summit held in his country in September this year.
