Zambia: K800 Billion Pumped Into Road Projects

The National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) has disbursed more than K800 billion for the various road projects and related activities in different parts of the country.

NRFA spokesperson, Alphonsius Hamachila said the disbursed funds were sourced from the donors, the Road Fund and specific Government-funded projects.

Mr Hamachila said in a statement released yesterday that the total amount disbursed from the Road Fund and Government funding amounted to more than K686 billion and more than K75 billion was disbursed under the European Union road projects.

He said the disbursement for the World Bank-funded projects amounted to more than K25 billion, with more than K11 billion being disbursed under Danida-funded projects.

The disbursement made by the NFRA for the World Bank-funded projects are K5 billion for Chipata and Katete feeder roads rehabilitation and the K1 billion reconstruction of selected priority river crossings in Laupula Province among others.

The projects funded by the Danida funds included: the K8 billion Mongu-Senanga Road works and the K700 million for the detailed design and construction of Mumbwa weigh bridge.

Mr Hamachila said the disbursement for the projects funded by the European Union include K13 billion for the periodic maintenance of the Luwingu-Nsombo Road, K8 billon for the maintenance of Mpongwe-Machiya Road on the Copperbelt, while K4 billion was spent for the works on the Kalomo-Kabanga Mission Road in Southern Province.

Some of the major disbursements from the Road Fund and Government Projects are K45 billion for the rehabilitation of the Zimba-Livingstone Road in Southern Province. The NRFA also spent K35 billion in support of the Road Transport and Safety Agency activities across the country.

"The NRFA will continue working with, and through key players and stakeholders in ensuring a quality road network throughout Zambia by providing adequate financial resources for developing, maintaining, monitoring and evaluating of road infrastructure and road transport services in the country," he said.

Mr Hamachila said NRFA disbursed K34 billion for the periodic maintenance of the Chipata-Lundanzi Road and K28 billion for the upgrading of the Choma-Chitongo Road.

Other projects to benefit from the disbursement are K18 billion for the design, supervision and reconstruction of the twin palm, Ibex hill-Kabulonga, Avondale-Kabulonga and K17 billion for the periodic maintenance of the Lusaka International Airport turn off-Luangwa Bridge.

Other projects to benefit from the disbursement are the Serenje via Mukuku bridge to Samfya, including sections of Samfya to Mansa at a cost of K16 billion. A total of K14 billion for the rehabilitation and maintenance of some Lusaka roads, which include Nationalist-Mortuary, Chandwe Musonda and Dedani Kimati among others.

Seventeen billion Kwacha had been released for the rehabilitation of Luanshya township roads and maintenance of the Nansaga Farm Bloc roads in Central Province.
