Lagos — After a two years pause, Jazz lovers would again be treated to an interesting time this year as the Jazz component of the prestigious Muson Festival has been reintroduced.
The last edition was held in 2006 and featured world acclaimed Grammy award winning Guitarist Earl Klugh performing alongside 'the masked one', Nigeria's Lagbaja. The year before (2005), featured Jonathan Butler, Habana Sax, Karen Patterson and The SR Orchestra with several guest artistes.
Over the years, other Jazz greats like Hugh Masekela, Al Jarreau and more have been featured.
This year's edition is bumper-packed with a promising line-up that includes SA-based Mozambiquecan Multiple Award Winning 'Guitar Phenomenon', Jimmy Dludlu; ace trumpeter and jazz improviser, Biodun & His band Batik; master contra-bassist, Bright Gain; the delectable soul and jazz female vocalist, Mfon; melody maker and folksong wonder, Beautiful Nubia, the next Jazz band poised to take the scene by storm, 5 YZ (wise) men and the bass and rhythm guitar-playing duo, Pure & Simple.
The jazz festival under the leadership of Bashorun J.K. Randle (chairman, festival committee) and Chief Femi Adeniyi-Williams (chairman, MUSON) is taking a new turn and being positioned as a jazz tourism signature event building on the pedigree and reputation of the Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON).
This is to place it side by side with other established international jazz festivals like Cape Town Jazz Festival, SA; Molde Jazz Festival, Norway; Pori Jazz, Finland; Montreal Jazz Festival, Canada; Umbra Jazz Festival, Italy; Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland amongst others on the established global jazz circuit.
It is also complementing the efforts of the Lagos International Jazz Festival and other events to make Lagos, and, of course, Nigeria, a jazz tourism destination.
The festival kicks of November 6-7, 2009.
