Nigeria: FOF Explores Drama to Honour Giwa, Fawehinmi

Lagos — Friends of Fawehinmi (FOF) organized a stage performance of Fredrick Durrennmatt's, a German writer who made debut in 1967 in London titled "conservation at night" in commemoration of the 23rd anniversary of gruesome murder of the founding editor-in-chief of Newswatch Magazine, Mr.Dele Giwa.

The drama which lasted for about one hour was held in Ikeja, Lagos recently, it mirrored the life and times of Dele Giwa as a journalist and the course for which he lived and died including the reaction of Nigerians to his death.

The stage play featured two characters, veteran actor, Segun Sofowote who portrayed the life of Dele Giwa as a writer, who lived and died for what he believes was right and the truth and star actor, Wale Macauly who also acted as the killer assigned to destroy the writer because his write ups were not in favour of the wicked leaders who have no concern for the common man in the society.

In the play, the writer was attacked by the henchman for fighting for the right of the common man in the society through his write ups, in the course of the battle to survive, he cried out to his neighbours for help but known turned to rescue him until he was finally stabbed to death.

The event also featured a special renditions by elegant stallion Onyeka Onwenu and a solo performance of the TV presenter cum actor, Otuba Tunji Sotimirin, who brought back to memory lane, the virtues of the late Gani Fawehinmi.

Sotimirin read his poem dedicated to late Gani Fawehinmi, who fought for the right of the common man till his death thus bringing back the memories of the icon to the audience.

Sotimirin compared the lamentation of the writer in the play, to the situation of the country; he said wickedness in our time causes the just to die like criminals.

Speaking further, he said the human life has become so cheap in Nigeria to the existent that nobody cares to investigate on the barbaric killings experienced in the country.

He also stressed the need for brotherly love in the country and the need to stand and fight for the truth even if it worth our life.

According to him, a state that cannot protect life of its citizens is not worth called a state, recounting the barbaric election held in Ekiti state where over 70 people perished and nothing was done, he said such can not happen in America.

Also, pointing to the stage play, Barr. Festus Keyamo said the silence of those in the street to the man who was killed can be likened to the state of Nigeria law enforcement agent where the killers are looking for the killers. According to him that has been the reason why the perpetrators continue to escape judgment while the country continues to record more brutal killings of innocent citizens.

While Chairman of Amuwo Odofin Local Government, Ayo Adewale said the people are tired of lamenting because they are helpless.

He also said lamentation can only stop when the right people ascend the position of power.

On his part, Ex Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) Chairman, Lanre Agunbiade said Nigerian are not silence but helpless.

He therefore called on the media to hold themselves the responsibility to shout aloud and keep hammering on the case of brutal murdering of innocent people until change is infected.

In like manner, Mohammed Fawehinmi regretted that despite the rich resources of the country it population are still suffering because of the greed of the people in power.

He assured of his willingness to fight for the same course his father Gani Fawehinmi fought for before his death.
