Abuja — The Governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Saidu Dakingari, has stated that the inauguration of the Birnin Kebbi branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), would encourage students of the state to take to engineering as a profession while the state's infrastructural development projects would get greater professional attention to meet international standards.

A statement from Head of Media and Publication, Ikenna Emeka Okpani, said the Governor, who was speaking at the inauguration of the Birnin Kebbi branch by the NSE President, Engr. Kashim Ali in Birnin Kebbi yesterday said his government relies heavily on engineers in the design and construction of various infrastructures ranging from roads, buildings, water drainages and electricity.

Alhaji Dakingari who was represented at the occasion by the Secretary to the State government, Arch. Ahmed Moh'd Sallam said the inauguration of the branch would bring about more efficient service delivery as a result of more professional regulation and peer group review.

Earlier, the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. Kashim Ali said the Birnin Kebbi branch has become the 52nd branch of the society which has over 30,000 members across in the country.

He observed that one of the objectives of the society was to ensure that engineering was practised in Nigeria in accordance with the codes of engineering practise, in the interest of public safety, and for the protection of her development and economic investments. Engr Ali called on the state government to invest more in engineering education and to avoid the patronage of quacks in the execution of contracts in the state.

He said the country has enough competent engineers to handle any form of project and wondered why most governments waste so much money hiring expatriates to do jobs that can be handled locally by the Nigerian engineer.

A former Chairman of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and Commissioner of Special Duties in Kebbi, Prof Mohammed Abubakar Gulma, who is a Fellow of the NSE, said the Association of Engineers in Kebbi started the journey to become a branch six years ago and praised the efforts late Engr Umaru Bena, former chairman of the branch who passed on a day before the inauguration, Engr Fatima Yelwa reputed to be the first female engineer in Nigeria and Engr. Yusuf Jega who are all late now.
