Vice-Peresident, Dr Ali Mohamed Shein at the weekend cautioned Tanzanians against what he said was growing habit of taking laws in their arms by lynching various suspects, contending that the move negated good governance tenets.
The vice president was speaking after inaugurating Nyamboge police post building constructed at the cost of Sh44.7 million contributed Rubondo National Park and Bugando ward residents.
Dr Shein urged the Bugando ward residents to refrain from usurping the role of the police force and the judiciary by sending suspects to the newly built police post for 28 villages of the ward.
"You have taken an exemplary decions to build the police post," he told the ward residents, promising them that the government would be behind them in ensure the police post was fully fledged.
The vice-President, however, called on the residents of the ward to accord the law enforcers at the police post due cooperation in ongoing community policing spirit in a bid to tame crime in their ward.
The police post, according to Dr Shein, would be operational within a week's period during which about 10 police officers would be posted and other essential logistics would be accomplished.
Bugando division secretary, Mr Emmanuel Maungo, earlier told the vice-President that residents of the ward had contributed Shs7.4 million for the construction of the police post, while the remainder was topped up by the national park.
The objective of constructing the police post, according to the division secretary, was to curb crime that rocked the ward. The newly police post though was still facing a number of challenges, including lack of polic barracks and transport facilities, he said.
Dr Shein is in a three-day tour of Mwanza region that will see him inspecting various development projects and addressing public rallies in Geita, Sengerema and Ukerewe districts, which he had never visited since the 2005 general election. ends
