Zimbabwe:DJs' Reunion Breathes New Life At Soul City

31 October 2009

RENOWNED disc jockeys DJ Munya and Tonderai "TK" Katsande have renewed their professional romance at Soul City Club in Greencroft after some years of separation. The duo, which made headlines with interesting joint shows on radio about five years ago, has re-joined forces away from the airwaves.

The DJs say their reunion at Soul City will bring back the old memories of their exciting duets on radio.

DJ Munya is still on radio but TK is now a producer and marketer who is working on a number of projects.

"We have dreamt of this reunion for a long time but our professional commitments were keeping us apart," explained DJ Munya.

"It would have been fascinating to make the reunion on radio but my buddy's professional commitments have kept him busy. But we are hopeful that those that come to Soul City will have a taste of those old days again."

The duo has been playing at the club for a couple of weeks and the response has been encouraging.

When Standardplus visited the club last week the two treated audiences to exciting soul, R n B, reggae and some old skool tunes in a reputable way.

Audiences danced their hearts out as the wheel spinners took turns to unleash hit after hit in the respective genres.

Some members of the audience that spoke to Standardplus said TK and DJ Munya had breathed life into the formerly sombre joint.

One could be deceived to believe that Soul City is not a popular spot in the early hours of the night but the club swells to capacity when DJs take to the turn-tables.

DJ Munya and TK said their attempt to reunite in club sessions earlier this year had hit a snag after the club they had chosen closed down a few days after their resumption of duty.

TK said he was overwhelmed by the success of the project that had been in the pipeline for years.

"It is a dream come true for us. We are grateful for Soul City management for giving us the opportunity to relive our old days. It might not be on radio where we reach fans across the country but we will do our best for those that come to this club," said TK.

TK is one of the local DJs that have made an impact locally and regionally. He earned himself rave reviews when he joined South Africa's revered music television station Channel O where he made a mark.

On returning home, he rejoined the then 3FM and left just after the station moved to Gweru as Power FM in 2001.

He has flirted with radio on several occasions before withdrawing to personal business.

DJ Munya has had a similar on-and-off relationship with radio while his profile as a club DJ is also commendable.
