Banjul — The councillor for Bakau New Town ward, Alhagie Bahoum, has indicated that the rehabilitation of Bakau New Town Bertil Harding Highway, along Independence Stadium, is not directly under Kanifing Municipal Council.

In an interview with the Daily Observer, Councilor Bahoum said that Bakau New Town Bertil Harding Highway is a major highway, and that all major highways are usually rehabilitated by the National Roads Authority (NRA). He said he has observed the dilapidated nature of the said road which came about thanks to a gully erosion from the eastern side of the said junction, but he added that he has never been negligent of it. The councillor revealed that plans are currently underway for its rehabilitation, but because of the incessant downpour, the rehabilitation effort could not be effective.

According to him, KMCÂ's Planning and Development Committee is currently working with NRA in trying to identify major roads for rehabilitation. Â"We donÂ't want to leave everything in the hands of the NRA, this is why we are making a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with M and J company for rehabilitationÂ", Councillor Bahoum stressed. He finally disclosed that by the year 2010 all councillors within KMC would be mandated to identify at least one road in their areas for rehabilitation.
