Gambia: More Commendations For President Jammeh

Banjul — The President of the Republic, His Excellency, Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh continues to receive more congratulatory messages from Gambians in the country and abroad on his landmark UN address, the observance of the Holy month of Ramadan and Eid-Ul Fitr.

The latest to arrive at State House came from Alhaji Ahmed Cherno B. Drammeh, Hon Elizabeth YF Renner, Alhaji Alieu Badara Jeng , Alhaji Dembo M Badjie and Moses Benjamin Jallow.

The messages read:

Your Excellency and Dear Brother; It is my utmost pleasure and delight that I seize this golden opportunity to express my profound gratitude and appreciation to Your Excellency for the historic and unprecedented speech that you made to the world?s largest body during its 64th General Assembly Meeting in New York, United States of America.

It is a forgone conclusion that the sensitive issues discussed in your speech have always been considered as No Go Areas especially for Africans and third world countries in general. The fact remains that colour or race does not make one superior over others nor wealth or more developed makes you more human than others. The only one God, who created all living organisms and indeed human beings, says all human beings are equal under His Eyes. Few key things have been prominent in your speech and I would like to thank you once more for being the First Head of State to say them in this August body:

Your Excellency, you were the first president as far as my memory can serve me, to start your speech with the name of Allah- in the name of Allah The Most Gracious and The most Merciful ? you also showered praises to your Lord by Saying praises be onto God, The creator of all creatures (Three times).

You Excellency, in the history of the UN General Assembly Meetings you will be recorded as the first president to call on the state of Israel to accept and respect the two-state solution that the international community has so clearly articulated without preconditions. You also urged the UN Security Council to ensure that its resolutions are respected by all states and enforced regardless of who they are, where they come from.

Your have continuously over the years including this year urged UN to ask United States of America to lift trade embargo on Cuba which has brought unquantifiable suffering to the people of Cuba particularly, women and children, a gross violation of their fundamental Human Right and dignity.

Your call for Taiwan to be invited to participate in all the meetings and activities of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) amongst others. Taiwan has a legitimate right to full membership of all UN Specialized agencies since Taiwan, with 23 million people, a democratic state is still being denied this fundamental human right that the UN is supposed to uphold and protect in the first place.

Your delegation renewed their full support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco, and on the question of the Moroccan Sahara, you and your delegation remain convinced that the proposal of the Moroccan government to grant substantive autonomy to the Sahara Region on the basis of the negotiations initiated by the Security council, and conducted and agreed by the Parties would lead to a lasting and peaceful resolution of the conflict.

Finally, Your Excellency, even more encouraging was the last statement that touched on reforms that are long overdue in the UN Assembly. Your delegation therefore urged the president of the General Assembly to exert more effort on the issue within the term of this 64th general Assembly, and ensured that the continent of Africa has at least two permanent seats at the Security Council with full veto powers or else any resolution passed by the Security Council will not be binding on Africa or any AU Member States by the end of 2010.

Africa, a continent ten times the size of Europe does not have a single permanent seat at the Security Council whilst Europe has more than one permanent seat. Africa has been subjected to discrimination, marginalisation, exploitation and humiliation for very long time. We the Africans are no longer going to accept this status quo. We will put an end to this not later than December 31st 2010. You are hereby put on notice.

Mr President and Dear Brother, to conclude, I would like to once again register my fullest support to this speech and I call on patriotic citizens of this country to acknowledge and recognize Your Excellency for this marvelous speech. Lastly, but not the least, I pray to Almighty Allah to protect you and your family and to guide you, give you good health and the required resources so that you can take this country where you want to take it (the sky is the limit)?

Your Sincerely

Alhaji Ahmad Cherno B. Drammeh

Former President of GSIC

and principal adviser of the council
