Liberia: Gunfire Ends Jailbreak

2 November 2009

Several prisoners at the Monrovia Central Prison, the nation's largest, who attempted another jailbreak Sunday, found themselves at bay when UNMIL soldiers opened heavy volleys of fire to end their dream.

The jailbreak attempt was averted by the Jordanian police assigned at the Central Prison, but they could not, along with Liberian security officers, give casualty figures, if any. But one prisoner, with his head bandaged, was spotted being escorted out of the prison probably for hospital.

UNMIL troops threatened to break this paper's camera if pictures were taken of their activities.

This is the 4th jailbreak at the Central Prison alone since 2006. UNMIL, commenting on previous jailbreaks, had said the mandate was not the use of weapons in such cases.
