Maputo — The latest results from the provisional count of the results sheets from Wednesday's general election, undertaken by the Electoral Administration Technical Secretariat (STAE), with almost 90 per cent of polling stations are as follows. Candidates and parties are listed in the order they appear on the ballot paper, and AIM has omitted, in the parliamentary results, the minor parties who do not have enough votes to secure any seats in the future parliament.

Maputo city (788 of 791 stations - 99.6 per cent - processed)

Presidential election

Daviz Simango (MDM): 51,294 (15 per cent) Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 275,864 (80 per cent) Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo): 16,385 (5 per cent)

Parliamentary election

Frelimo: 263,819 (76.6 per cent) Renamo: 18,902 (5 per cent) MDM: 56,136 (16.3 per cent)

Maputo province (all 848 stations - 100 per cent - processed)

Presidential election

Daviz Simango (MDM): 26,577 (10 per cent) Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 227,452 (85.7 per cent) Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo): 11,322 (4.3 per cent)

Daviz Simango (MDM): 9,491 (4.8 per cent) Armando Guebuza (Frelimo): 160,426 (81.7 per cent) Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo): 26,436(13.5 per cent)

Parliamentary election

Frelimo: 156,980 (82.5 per cent) Renamo: 22,969 (12.1 per cent) MDM: 6,466 (3.4 per cent).

From these results it is possible to predict, using the d'Hondt method of proportional representation, the composition of the incoming parliament. The number of deputies from each party for the various constituencies will be as follows:

This prediction is unlikely to change by more than one or two seats as the final ten per cent of polling station result sheets are processed.
