Kenya: Aga Khan Mombasa Splash to Top

Nairobi — Aga Khan Academy Mombasa bagged 574 points to win the Brookeside National Age-Group and Relays Swimming Championship in Mombasa last weekend.

During the three-day championships which took place at the Oshwal Community swimming pool, Bandari Swim Club finished second with 460 points while Nairobi's Otters Swim Club were third with 354.

Braeburn School of Nairobi were fourth with 344 points, Brookehouse, fifth (303), Oshwal Academy Mombasa, sixth (327.5), International School of Kenya, seventh (297) and Uganda's Aga Khan Dolphins, eighth (170).

Braeburn Mombasa International, Oshwal Academy of Nairobi and Aga Khan Academy Nairobi completed in ninth, tenth and eleventh positions with 169, 129 and 81 points respectively.

Coast teams dominated boys' placings with Aga Khan Mombasa claiming the crown with 392 points while Bandari were second with 371. Coast Swim Club were third with 260 points.

New national records

In the girls' category, hosts Oshwal Academy won the title with 284 points while Nairobi's Braeburn School and Brookehouse were second and third with 276 and 215 points respectively.

Rachita Shah of Aga Khan Mombasa registered three more new national records when she won girls' Open 200m backstroke event. Rachita had earlier set five new records.

Nineteen-year-old Chitta Mbarak of Bandari was declared the best male swimmer having collected 68 points, followed by Joshua Oruya (16) of Brookehouse School who got 46 points as Kenya international swimmer Ramadhan Vyombo (21) of Coast Swim Club was third with 45 points.

Sylvia Brunlehner (15) of Bandari was declared the best lady swimmer when she bagged in 89 points. Eleven-year-old Martha Opiyo of Braeburn School was second with 75 points while Rachita Shah got 54 to take third position.

In the last day, Martha won two open events in girls' 100m individual medley in a time of 1:20.17 and 100m breaststroke in 1:36.02. She was second in the 800m freestyle in 11:48.42 with Brunlehner winning it in 10:50.46.
