Nairobi — A Sh150,000 jackpot has been introduced in the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) national cross country series for the most consistent male and female runners over the six-leg competition.
KCB chief executive officer, Martin Oduor Otieno, confirmed that a total of Sh5.2 million will be used to sponsor this season's championship.
Otieno was speaking during the official launch of the new Athletics Kenya season for 2009/2010.
Kenya's preparations for the World Cross Country Championships start in two weeks with the first meeting at Machakos High School. Five other cross country meetings will be held in, Kericho, Meru, Kisii, Kapsokwony in Mt. Elgon and Eldoret.
The national cross country trials will be at Ngong on February 20 before the team moves to camp in Embu for one month's training ahead of World Cross Country Championship set for March 28 in the Polish city of Bydgoszcz.
The jackpot was withdrawn in the 2007/2008 season because of post election violence in which several meetings were cancelled citing insecurity. The officials however, did not spell out the conditions to be met for one win the jackpot.
Last time, one required to win four of the six meetings and triumph at the national championship to qualify.
Out of the Sh5.2 million, Sh1.5 will go towards the prize money for the winners while another Sh560,000 will be paid out during the national championship where the best 24 athletes will be picked to travel to Bydgoszcz.
