Kenya: Iracha Floors Rivals to Claim Muthaiga Prize

Nairobi — An excellent second round score saw Gikunda Iracha clinch this year's Chairman's (Selest Kilinda) Prize at Muthaiga Golf Club at the weekend.

Iracha, currently playing off 13 handicap, fired nett 73 during the first round played on Saturday and while a number of players found the going tough during Sunday's second round, he posted an excellent 40 stableford points to win the event sponsored by Kenya Wine Agencies in conjunction with Magnate Ventures, Total Kenya, Chartis Insurance, and Delloitte with a differential of 33 points.

Taking home the men's prize with 35 points (72-37) was Rajesh Bhabra who won by two points from Washington Okeyo (75-38).

Okeyo took the second prize but after beating Collins Omondi (74-37), and Chege Gitura (73-36) on countback. The ladies' title went to Rose Koome with 44 points and in second place was Njeri Mugo on 47.

David Geita emerged the best junior with 41 (72-31) and in second place was Alistar Sequeira with 42 points. Leading the past chairmen of the club was Michael Gitau Waweru with 42 points and the first round winner and runner up were Peter Kinyua and Michael Itote with 69 nett each.

The second round honours went to James Gathage and Jonathan Ciano on 38 and 37 points respectively while Nat Kangethe was the best senior with 45 (76-31).

Vet Lab's Mukami Gatonye was the first round guest winner with 78, winning by a shot from N. Wabwire while the second round prizes went to David Ndirangu and Solomon Mugwe with 38 and 32 points.

One of the leading amateurs in the country, Kumar Dhall, won the round one gross on 73 and the round two winner was John Gitonga on 76.

Before the Chairman's prize, Muthaiga had hosted the Kenya Association of Investment Groups where the BDS Group of former national team captain Sunny Mangat, Amos Oluoch, Eric Mungai and George Kuria posted a total of 98 points to emerge the best group of the inaugural event which attracted a field of 80 players.

The winners won by two points from the Lads group of Steve Njukia, Edwin Kinyua and Paul Mathenge.

Taking the individual title with 39 points was Kepha Bosire of KCB, while Isabella Desouza was the best lady with 33 points. S. Vaghela won the Piga Mingi with nine points.
