Tunis — In an address [1]delivered on his behalf ON Monday by Mr Mohamed Ghannouchi, RCD Deputy Chairman and Prime Minister, on the occasion of the opening of the 21 st Democratic Constitutional Council (RCD) International Symposium, President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali stressed that the RCD has "optimally prepared for the Symposium" which he said comes just after the country's presidential and legislative elections which were held on October 25.
The elections said President Ben Ali "constituted a major historic event, reflecting the degree of maturity our country has achieved and the solidity of the democratic pluralist edifice in our society".
The elections which were held in a climate of transparency and fair competition were praised by observers from sisterly and friendly countries, he said.
Addressing the Symposium's theme, "What kind of global economic system to ensure stability and development in the world", President Ben Ali stressed the fact that "the absence of a comprehensive vision that takes into consideration the notion of equitable development, has deepened disparities among countries and peoples", adding that Tunisia was among the first countries to have monitored developments taking place on the world financial markets, by establishing follow up groups, as well as centre for financial and monetary research and studies within the Central Bank of Tunisia.
President Ben Ali voiced Tunisia's commitment to "forge ahead with reforms, in order to achieve the full convertibility of the dinar by the end of 2014, promote Tunisia as a regional financial hub, and enhance the pace of growth that will allow us to join the ranks of developed nations and further improve social conditions".
While commending the efforts exerted by the G -20 to lay down grounds for a reorganisation and adjustment of the global financial system, President Ben Ali also called for "increasing the presence of emerging and developing countries and for involving them into decision-making".
He also stressed the importance of reaching a global consensus which that can transform globalisation into a "positive force" that will help set up a "sustainable, fair and equitable social development".
"The international community is called upon to establish an equitable and non discriminatory global strategy that gives priority to the development dimension", added President Ben Ali, stressing that "ensuring stability, peace and security in the world and providing equal opportunities for all peoples, are among the fundamental and constant tenets of our policy".
