Tunis — A working session, chaired by Mr. Abdessalem Mansour, Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, was held on Saturday in Jendouba governorate.
The meeting aims at focusing on the new agricultural projects announced by President Ben Ali during the extraordinary session of the Jendouba Governorate Regional Council held on July 7, 2009.
During the meeting, the minister took cognizance of the status of these projects including the evacuation of stagnant water in major irrigation perimeters, renovation and extension of these areas and the development of 16 Kilometers of vicinal tracks.
These projects also aim at increasing by 50% grain production, enhance the storage capacity, to increase the number of thoroughbred cows to 24 000 head against 19 000 currently with a view to raise milk production from 132 000 tons to 164 000 tons and to increase production of red meat to reach about 15 000 tons against 12 000 tons currently.
Moreover, 1747 households and 57 schools should be connected to drinking water system.
The first phase of these projects should be completed in 2010 while the second phase is scheduled to be completed by 2011.
In Bousalem, Mr. Mansour also paid a visit to the farming company "El marja" and took cognizance of seeding projects.
At the headquarters of the Central Wheat Co-operative, the minister inquired about the operation of supplying farmers with improved seeds and fertilizer as well as about the drainage works of Oued Essalmini, which are part of the presidential project.
On the fringes of the meeting, Mr. Mansour visited the delegation of Tabarka, where he was briefed on the activity of the vocational training center for fishing and of its upgrading program, also chaired the closing of a fishing contest for amateurs.
