Kigali — Road users have been called upon to observe traffic rules to curb road accidents.
The call was made by the Commissioner General of Police, Emmanuel Gasana, at the start of the national Road Safety Week.
The launch was held at Kimihurura round -about, next to Kigali Business Centre (KBC) yesterday.
Gasana pointed out that reckless driving, over-speeding and drunken driving, as some of the major causes of road accidents in the country.
"Drivers no longer care about the road rules and this puts them at the risk of encountering accidents and loss of innocent lives," he observed.
According to police reports the rate of accidents increased by 3.6 percent in the last three months.
About 1704 accidents have so far been registered in the last nine months. In September alone, 26 people died in the 246 accidents registered.
Last year, over 300 people died in 2,511 accidents that were recorded countrywide.
