Kigali — Energy ministers in the East African Community (EAC) have agreed to speed up energy projects in the region.
The decision was made during the just concluded 6th EAC-Energy Conference that was held over the weekend at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel, Rubavu which brought together five energy ministers from; Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania and Uganda.
"We have agreed to accelerate regional power projects as it was critical and urgent. And they (Ministers) were excited with the Kivu methane gas project and we all came to the conclusion that we share expertise in different areas," Rwanda's Minister of State for Energy, Eng. Albert Butare said.
Butare said that the two-day meeting was a success since all participants understood the urgency of the regional power projects.
"There is hope that Rwanda and Burundi might be having petroleum and ongoing exploration should bring tangible facts," Burundian Minister of Energy and Mines, Dr Samuel Ndayiragije, said.
