Kampala — Bukedde TV's launch last Friday saw folks at the station going out of the studios to meet their viewers in 13 bars in Kampala, where new fans of channel 13 went into high gear celebrating its inception.
One such pub was Rock Catalina in Ntinda. The TV offered the patrons beer, T-shirts and antennas on the day it was proved that the wise ones came from the East. To win goodies, one only had to answer a few questions.
Margaret Anyella, a mother who was out with her boys, won an antenna. Another only identified as Patrick, won crates of beer. Both are from the East as there were ululations of Eyalama Noi (thank you) and Ateso chant songs.
Another fan simply walked up to the MC and grabbed the antenna, claiming he was the most ignored fan of the rainy night. Some viewers are as bold as the TV staff. He won it and pulled off all the pranks of an excited gambler. He put the antenna on his head and shouted that he had transformed into a television set. When he was pestered to switch it on, he claimed the socket was in his groin area, a reserve for the women. Ngoni, who were expected to perform, did not turn up.
Bukedde TV, the latest and most promisingly entertainment venture to open this year, is bold. From such programmes as Ekigwo to Nigerian movies with Luganda commentary, it is a brave move away from what had been offered before.
