Lagos — Following continuous complaints by members of the public on the bill being received from the numerous independent refuse collectors under the Private Sector Participation programme, the state government has directed aggrieved residents to resist and report any outrageous bill by the refuse collectors.
It also urged residents to decline payment to the PSP operators at the point of disposing their refuse, adding that payment should be made at the end of each month at the presentation of bill. The directive followed complaints by some residents that most time the bills are outrageous and that the refuse collectors now demands for payment before refuse are carted away.
Managing Director of the Lagos State Waste management Authority (LAWMA), Mr. Ola Oresanya who gave the directive while answering questions from journalists at the end of the monthly environmental sanitation in Ikorodu area of Lagos saying whoever is not pleased with bill sent to their home can report to the nearest LAWMA office. Oresanya acknowledged that it is legal for the refuse collectors to demand for money from residents for service rendered. He added that such payment should be made at the end of the month when service has been rendered.
His words, "if you are not pleased with the bills, please endeavour to complain to my office and the matter will be looked into accordingly. On the issue of demanding for payment before service, they have right to collect money from the residents, but payment should be after service".
