Abuja — A non-governmental organization, Nomadic Education Initiative, has promised to increase the level of enrolment and retention among the nomadic group of Nigeria.
The initiator of the programme, Hajia Hafsat Hammed Maddibo said this during the inauguration of nomadic education Initiative at the Tulden Fulani Village kugbo area of the FCT yesterday.
She said the idea came up while rounding up her Master degree programme in philosophy when she decided to find out the reason behind low level of education among the nomadic group.
According to her, "the nomadic groupare classified as one of the disadvantaged group when it comes to education so I decided to find out role of motivational strategy on the enrolment and retention of fulde nomadic pupils in nomadic schools".
She also added that during her findings, National Commission for Nomadic Education confirmed that there are about 9.5 million nomads in Nigeria and only 2.2% of this population in 1991 enrolled and were able to complete their education.
At the flag off of the initiative she said it was difficult for her to get them together because of t he fact that they are always on the move in search of a convenient environment for their castles but now she has been able to get a reasonable population at the village.
The chief of the fulde village who commended the initiator's efforts said it is a good initiative as it affords them to have more understanding about a lot of things which they are not aware of before the programme and promised to always support the organization by motivating his people to always attend to them whenever they visited them.
Women at the village were educated by Doctor Fadila Ismail on malaria, ante- natal care as well as on personal hygiene and also urged them to always go to hospital whenever they notice any abnormality.
Although at the beginning of the programme there were no class rooms in the village but now with help of the NGO and support of the National Commission for Nomadic Education two class rooms have been built in the village.
