Karamoja — People in Karamoja region should take charge of their security instead of solely depending on the UPDF, a bishop has appealed. Bishop Joseph Abura of karamoja diocese last Friday said: "The community wants the UPDF to guard their families but the best security is by the people themselves. They should not pick firearms but voices, whistles, spears to curb internal insecurity."
While meeting elders from Teso and Karamoja sub-regions in Moroto, Bishop Abura said the committees formed by the government to help in disarmament have become inactive, thus the community should take up the responsibility.
However, Moroto Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Mr Bob Opio, said apart from raiding and petty thefts, 'Moroto is calm'. He said the UPDF have recovered 26,000 (70 per cent of illegally possessed) guns. Mr Opio added that although the government is in charge of providing security, the community should also complement it.
