Kampala — The Uganda Federal Alliance, a pressure group founded by renegade Ms Beti Olive Kamya plans to turn into a fully-fledged political party in six months time, a senior official announced yesterday. UFA's administrator Yosam Baguma told Daily Monitor yesterday that plans were underway to transform the group from a mere pressure group into a political party.

Speaking on the sidelines of the groups scheduled weekly press conference, Mr Baker Byayi, one of the mobilisers, separately said UFA is also already canvassing for candidates to field in various political contests ahead of the February 2011 general elections.

Mr Byayi said the group is taking its time to mould the alliance into an "admirable political party" strong enough to favourably compete with parties already in existence. "UFA will by all means be a party by 2011. We are working on establishing it among the people and this has proved successful because we have quite many signatures from potential voters," he said.

The law states that for a group to register either as a political party or organisation, it has to show evidence of support through signatures from at least two thirds of all the districts in the country. This means UFA would require signatures from at least 69 districts to be registered. Ms Kamya separately said UFA members are free to discuss the future of their organisation to get the best ideas to spur it forward. "The members are free to debate the future," she said.
