Abuja — An environmentalist, Mr. Toyin Ajayi, has said many Nigerians are not bothered by what constitute their environment thereby endangering their health status.
Mr. Ajayi who was speaking in an interview with our reporter in Abuja over the weekend, noted that most of the environmental-related disaster in the country are manmade and avoidable.
The expert said the declaration of a sanitation Day by some States in the country is not necessary if the residents of such states are alive to their responsibility to the environment which they live.
According to him, most of the major cities in Nigeria lacked proper drainage system, which he said is the major cause of flooding in some of this affected cities.
He advised those in position of authorities in both state and local governments in the country to take the advantage of the forth coming dry season to plan a comprehensive drainage system for major cities and towns within their Territories. The environmental expert also urged relevant stakeholders to start mounting aggressive campaigns against indiscriminate bush burning as dry season sets in.
On the global ecological problem, Mr. Ajayi commended the Federal government involvement in the global efforts to find ways of addressing the problem, adding that with total commitment of all the stakeholders, the problem could be addressed.
