Lagos — Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has appealed to the striking staff of the Lagos State University (LASU) to return to work in the interest of the students.

The governor made the appeal at the 9th National Women Conference organized by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) promising that the government would ensure that the problem is resolved.

In his remarks at the closing ceremony of the event, Governor Fashola said education, like security, medical services and electricity were essential services and workers in those sectors were not expected to down tools whenever there were industrial differences.

On the issue of compelling government officials to send their children to public schools to force government to allocate more funds to education, Fashola said the option was faulty, saying the constitution gave everyone the freedom to choose where to educate children, but added that the best thing to do was to upgrade public schools so that they could compete favourably or even surpass private schools. It would be recalled that last week, students of the university demanded the immediate removal of their Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdul-Lateef Hussein on the allegation that he lacked leadership qualities.

The students restated their demand when the Lagos State House of Assembly (LSHA) organized a public hearing on the crisis rocking the institution.
