Zimbabwe: MDC-T Undermining National Values - Masawi

3 November 2009

Harare — ZANU-PF has accused MDC-T of working with the country's Western detractors to undermine national values.

The party's deputy secretary for information and publicity, Cde Ephraim Masawi, said this following the "no show" of the MDC-T leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai at the burial of the late national hero Cde Misheck Chando last Saturday.

Mr Tsvangirai, who was appointed Prime Minister in the inclusive Government early this year, did not attended Cde Chando's burial.

He opted to play golf at Ruwa Country Club on the burial day. He has attended the burial of other national heroes since the formation of the inclusive Government.

"The failure by the MDC-T leader to attend the burial of Cde Chando should be viewed in the context of the MDC-T's origins," said Cde Masawi.

"The MDC-T is not an independent party and they are being forced to work against the country by their sponsors.

"It is highly likely that the MDC-T leader was instructed to snub the burial of Cde Chando by his Western sponsors."

The PM's spokesperson, Mr James Maridadi, said Mr Tsvangirai was not happy that he was not consulted on Cde Chando's hero status.

He said the process of selecting national heroes was only determined by Zanu-PF, which he claimed does not suit the new political dispensation.

Mr Maridadi said his boss was one of the principals in the inclusive Government so he was supposed to be consulted before Cde Chando was declared a national hero.

Maridadi;

How can Tsvangirai be consulted on the hero status of freedom fighters when he ran away from the struggle and sold out? Has Tsvangirai not demonized fighters of the Second Chimurenga for fighting for land? How then is he expected to make a fair judgment on people he disliked and has continued to dislike up to this day?

Did Tsvangirai, in 1978, while he was a Mujibha, not defect to the Special Branch and caused the death of scores of freedom fighters? Actually Tsvangirai gave a detailed account of the movement of freedom fighters in Buhera who were later ambushed and many perished in ensuing battles.

Was he not thereafter taken to the safety of Harare by the same notorious Special Branch? Answer me Maridadi!! How then can such a person sit on the panel of people deciding the hero status of freedom fighters he caused the death of?
