Part Harcourt — Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) says it has installed seven new circuit breakers in Afam substation in Rivers state to boost its power evacuation capacity.

PHCN also said, additional five circuit breakers would soon be installed in the station to enhance the evacuation of more power to the cities.

Executive Director, Transmission Company of Nigeria, a subsidiary of PHCN, Mr. Sola Akinniranye said this in Port Harcourt while briefing newsmen during the inspection of the project at Afam.

He said the station two 330kv transmission lines evacuates 1000mw of power to Aba and additional two 132kv lines evacuates 120mw to Port Harcourt and its environs.

Engr. Akiniranye further said PHCN facilities are capable and robust to effectively and efficiently evacuate all powers generated from the Afam thermal power station.

The director said the station cumulative capacity of 1120 mw is far in excess of the entire current generated capacity of 500mw in Afam.

According to him, rehabilitation works have been carried out in most stations as new transformers have been installed in Lagos, Delta, Gombe and Owerri to boost power supply in the country.

PHCN he said, is committed towards generating 6000mw of electricity supply in the country before the end of 2009.

Earlier, Executive Director, System Operations, Engr. Akinnwumi Bada called for improvement in the supply of industrial gas to thermal stations to boost power supplies.

He blamed the shutting down of thermal stations in Sapale, Geregu and Olorunsogo to inadequate gas supplies to generate needed power to feed the substations, while Egbin and Delta Power stations are generating less capacity due to limited gas supply.

"Our power stations that are currently idle and those operating at less than half their available capacities can only operate optimally if adequate gas are supply", he said.
