KAWAMBWA District Commissioner Gershom Tanga has appealed to the Ministry of Education to consider rehabilitating schools in the district.
Mr Tanga said in an interview it was important that the ministry rehabilitated schools before lives were lost.
He was reacting to recent incidents in which a number of school buildings collapsed in the district from strong winds.
Mr Tanga said Mukanta Basic School and a teacher's house collapsed because of a hail storm which hit Kawambwa at the weekend.
He said this was the third time Kawambwa had been hit by a storm in the last one week.
Among the schools that collapsed last week in Kawambwa was Mushindike and Ilengwe Basic schools.
Mr Tanga said it was unfortunate that this happened at the time pupils were writing examinations.
"So we want to appeal to the Ministry of Education to intervene before lives are lost," Mr Tanga said.
He said most buildings which were last rehabilitated in the 1950s, had developed cracks and were likely to collapse during this rain season, hence the need for the Government to work on the infrastructure.
