Nigeria: Govt Begins Implementation of Master Plan

Awka — Anambra state government said it is putting in place the structural framework for the implementation of the Master Plan for Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi as a major way of ensuring the effective and controlled development of the cities.

The state governor, Mr Peter Obi, who disclosed this while declaringopen the 40th Annual Conference and General Meeting of the NigeriaInstitute of Town Planning at Emmaus House, Awka said the governmentwas articulating a bill to that effect so as to give legal powers toguide the execution of the project.

He explained that proper planning was critical for effective planningof all segments of the society and necessary to create conduciveenvironment for healthy living, adding that members of the Institutehave vital role to play in the implementation of structural plans, including awareness creation and assisting in environmentalmanagement.

He noted that the state government had invested a lot in resources tosupport town planners in the state in capacity building and greaterproductivity and charged the participants to contribute to the current effort to discourage greed and excesses of bad leaders.

National President of the Institute, Mr Cabir Yari, who noted thatthe state is a land of opportunities, home of entrepreneurs andresourceful people, commended Obi for his giant steps totransform the state and create a healthy environment. He thanked the governor for the support and encouragement given to theInstitute and assured him of collaboration in the state's physicalplanning programmes.
