Yenagoa — WIFE of the lawmaker representing Nembe constituency 1 in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Mrs. Amalate Jonathan Obuebite has charged pupils and students to desist from activities that are capable of distracting them from their studies in order to safeguard their future.
Mrs. Obuebite, who gave the charge, during the distribution of educational relief materials, including school uniforms and books to 29 primary and seven secondary schools across Nembe Constituency 1, Nembe Local Government Area (LGA), lamented that cultism and examination malpractices now exist in primary and post primary schools.
Mrs. Obuebite further explained that the educational materials distributed were in fulfilment of her promise to the students.
"I am very passionate about the education of a child, because I also benefited from sound education. So now that I have the opportunity, I want to impact on my community," she said.
On why she established the 'Amalata Educational Foundation', the lawmaker's wife explained that she established the foundation to inculcate in students sound moral conduct, reading habits and to promote healthy competition which she said are building blocks for achieving academic excellence.
This she noted was in view of, peer group influences and other environmental factors that militate against the performance of students in academics.
She thanked her husband, Hon. Jonathan Obuebite who is the Chairman, House Committee on Education and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for his understanding and love in sponsoring the foundation. She recalled that it was in this spirit, that the lawmaker registered 200 students in his constituency for the WAEC, NECO and JAMB during the 2007/2008 academic sessions at Community Comprehensive Secondary Schools Ogoloma and Igbeta-Ewoama both in Nembe.
She expressed delight that the students came out in flying colours, including Mathematics and English language in the examination, adding that, "to a large extent the programmes of the foundation is being achieved," especially as more people are pleading to be assisted.
Shortly after taking delivery of the items, Principal of Nembe National Grammar School (NNGS), Mr. Mondibo Obebi thanked Mrs. Obuebite for her effort in improving the level of education in the area.
Mr. Obebi appealed to her to assist in building a library for the school and to also equip the computer centre with facilities to boost teaching and learning, just as he prayed for God's blessings to enable her continue the good work she is doing.
Mrs. Amalate Jonathan Obuebite was accompanied on the visit by the Commissioner, Local government Service Commission in charge of Nembe, Sir Clement Ene, Chairman, Education Authority, Nembe local government Area (LGA), Mr. Opuene Nimibo, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Nembe LGA, Mr. Lambert Gborienemi as well as the Constituency Manager and Coordinator of the foundation, Mr. Christopher Cole.
